Reading Tabs for Acoustic Guitar
Some people are born music genius. Initially, they don’t have to practically learn how to read notes just so they can sing or play some instruments. It’s the same thing with guitar players. But then again, this may only b good while you’re still starting out. Later on, if you want to proceed to more advanced level, you have to know how to read tabs. This way, you can learn how to play a variety of music with your guitar.
Here are the different tips in reading tabs with your acoustic guitar:
1. Study the tabs. When you speak of tabs, you are actually referring to the many lines of you see in the tab sheet. Each line represents every string in your acoustic guitar. If you are in doubt as to what string, you simply have to keep in mind this: the thicker the string, the lower they belong in the tab sheet.
2. Identify the positions of your fingers. You won’t see the exact drawing of fingers in tabs. Rather, the different positions are designated with numbers. You can find them written all over the tab sheet. These will be the position of your fingers on the fretboard of your guitar. Sometimes as you go along you will come across the “zero” position. This means that you play the note without having to place your finger on to the fretboard.
3. Learn to read the chords. The chord shall then be a series of notes, which allows you to produce sound or music. Normally, these notes are written vertically on horizontal lines.
4. Listen to the song while you’re learning how to read the tab. Make sure that when you’re trying to read the tab, you aren’t just relying on the tab sheet. Most of all, you must also learn how to listen to the actual music. Though the tabs can teach you where to position your fingers as well as what notes to play, they couldn’t inform you how long you will sustain the chord as well as the actual rhythm of the song.
5. Study the different symbols you can find in the tabs. More advanced tablatures appear to be much complicated, simply because they have several symbols or letters. If you don’t know what they mean, it will become very difficult for you to understand the tabs. Hence, make sure, too, that you acquaint yourself with their different meanings. Common symbols can include h (hammer on), p (pull off), and / (slide up).
